2. Instructions for cleaning paint stains on carpets

TKT Carpet will share tips for cleaning paint stains on carpet both wet and dry paint stains. Whether you’re dealing with acrylic, latex, water-based or oil-based paints, we can help.

2.1 How to Clean Acrylic Paint Stains

What you will need:

  • Rags, wet tissues
  • Toothbrush or scrubbing brush
  • Needle pliers
  • Knife
  • Washing powder
  • Acetone, isopropyl alcohol
  • Portable carpet washing machine (if applicable)
  • Wet vacuum cleaner
  • Gloves and masks

Cleaning procedure

Step 1: Soak the stain or scrape off the dried paint

Use a clean, wet paper towel or cloth to soak in as much new paint as possible. In case you treat a stain that has dried, use a scrubbing brush or toothbrush to brush the stain. Next, take the needle pliers and break the largely dried paint, then scrape it lightly with a handy knife.

Step 2: Remove stains with laundry detergent

First of all, you need to wet the stain with a damp rag with a dot. Acrylic is soluble in water. To wash away the paint stain further, put about 15ml of laundry detergent in your rag and pat the area. After that, instill several times if necessary.

Step 3: Use acrylic solute

If the acrylic paint has dried, you may need more water and detergent to decompose the paint. You can use acetone, a nail polish remover containing acetone, isopropyl alcohol or a soluble substance derived from citrus.

  • Moisten your rag with any of the above acrylic dissolved solutions
  • Dot the stained spot to dissipate the stubborn paint stains-
  • Clean the stain again with washing powder
  • Repeat until the stain is gone
  • Allow carpets to dry in the air before vacuuming
Step 4: Use carpet cleaners

If you are not satisfied with the results, try commercial carpet cleaners. They will remove any traces of paint left in your carpet fibers. Specially designed cleaners are stronger than acetone and other solubilizers we mentioned above.

  • Gently rub the carpet strands with a toothbrush
  • Spray carpet cleaner on the affected area
  • Let it sit for about 5 minutes
  • Dry the stain with a wet vacuum cleaner

Note: Safety Precautions when cleaning paint stains with Acetone. Acetone smoke poses a significant health risk when inhaled for long periods of time. Therefore, make sure that you are wearing a mask and that the room you are in is well ventilated. Also, make sure not to coat your carpet with acetone as you risk disintegrating the rubber bond.

2.2 How to clean wet rubber paint stains

What you will need:

  • Absorbent towels or paper towels
  • Mild dish soap
  • Hot water
  • Knives
  • Vinegar
  • Steam irons
  • Aerosols
  • Needle pliers
  • Vacuum cleaner

Cleaning procedure

Step 1: Remove excess paint with a knife

Scoop up as much paint as possible, but be careful not to let the paint spread. Start from the outside of the stain towards the center. Target new paint onto the top layer of your rug.

Step 2: rub the paint stain

Next, take a absorbent towel and gently dip over the remaining paint. The low enduring properties of this paint mean that a towel can absorb many spilled substances. Make sure you use clean pieces of cloth or rags to dot the spot. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the paint out, as this can push wet latex paint into the fibers.

Step 3: Soak the yellowed area with a cleaning solution

Pour a mixture of light dish soap (1 teaspoon) and warm water (240 ml) into a spray bottle. Apply the cleaning solution directly to the yellowed area and leave for about 5 minutes. Do not saturate in place.

Step 4: Absorb paint stains

However, this time you will absorb with the cleaning solution prepared above. Dip your cloth or washcloth in the solution and soak up the affected area. Repeat with clean towel sections until the paint does not stick to the towel. For stubborn stains, try instillation with vinegar. After removing all the rubber paint from the carpet, use a clean towel or paper towel to soak up any moisture left on the carpet. Allow to dry in the air.

Step 5: Vacuum the carpet

After the treatment area has dried, vacuum thoroughly to lift the crushed carpet fibers.

Step 2: Wet the stain with hot soapy water

Water-soluble rubber paint. However, for better results, you should apply a mixture of hot water (240 ml) and mild dish soap (4ml). Soak up the stain with just enough soapy water. This solution will wash off the dry paint within 20 minutes. In addition, you can saturate the paint stain with a stronger solvent, preferably vinegar, WD-40 or acetone.

Step 3: Scrape the paint stain

Try to remove as much liquid paint as possible with a putty knife. In case you are dealing with a large amount of paint, add a little solvent while combing the area with a bristle brush. This helps to loosen the latex paint layer, which makes it easier to absorb with a towel.

Step 4: The steam iron removes any stubborn stains

Holding a steam iron to the stain can do a little trick. It will wash away stubborn paint stains and you can remove everything with a putty knife. Next, dry the area with a clean towel. Vacuum thoroughly to remove residual paint particles

What you will need:

  • Knives
  • Clean cloth or paper towel
  • Light dishwashing liquid
  • Gloves and masks
  • Turpentine
  • Steam cleaning
  • Needle pliers or pins
  • Vacuum cleaner

Cleaning procedure

Step 1: Scrape off the wet paint or apply steam cleaner on the dried paint layers

Before starting to soak in new paint, try using a wiper knife to get some paint stains. Avoid rubbing or rubbing on stains. For oil-based paint stains that have dried, you should treat the stain with a carpet steamer. Steaming will soften the paint. If there are large patches of dry paint, use pliers or needle pins to break them apart.

Step 2: Dot the stain

Moisten a towel with a paint thinner recommended for paint stains, and then dot on the dented area. The most commonly used solvents include white spirit, acetone and turpentine.

Step 3: Dry the area

Once you have applied the paint thinner, absorb with a clean cloth. Repeat a few times with clean cloth sections until you remove the stain.

Step 4: Clean the carpet

First of all, you need to combine about 15ml of light dishwashing liquid with 473ml of cold water. Do not apply this cleaning solution directly to the paint area. Instead, moisten a towel with it and use a sponge to clean it.

Step 5: Dry the area

Use a clean towel to soak moisture on the carpet. After drying, run the vacuum cleaner on the carpet to suck out any remaining paint debris and straighten the fabric fibers.

Some notes:
  • If you are going to use turpentine to remove paint on carpets, make sure you wear gloves and a mask. In addition, your space should be well ventilated.
  • Turpentine can produce very toxic fumes if inhaled. If this paint thinner comes into contact with the skin, it can also irritate the skin.
  • Do not store turpentine along with sulfuric acid, hydrogen peroxide, or any other oxidants.

2.5 How to clean water-based paint stains

What you will need:

  • White cloth or rag
  • Hot water
  • Blunt knife
  • Dishwashing liquid
